After moving to Geneva with his wife in 1942, Théodore diligently devoted himself to the still-life painting genre. He selected commonplace objects, placing them on a table or in front of a window. Beyond the sculptural illusionistic rendering of objects and materials, Théodore developed a great sensitivity for colour balance. Combining cool and warm tones, his watering can is a fine example. In the aftermath of WWII, Théodore continued to develop his sculptural approach to still life through the use of colour. Books, flowers, fruit, musical instruments and crockery were his main subject matter. Forms tended to become deconstructed and lose their contours. Objects became more abstract, making way for a new balance based on dominant and intense tones of blues and oranges. Philippe Kaenel
