Théodore followed WWI by looking at pictures in foreign and Swiss illustrated newspapers and magazines. These inspired him to paint a naval battle with destroyers, submarines and air balloons, and a dark ship under a blue sky on the waters of Lake Geneva, in front of a small lakeside town rather like Morges.
